Pushpa felt too young to be married and wanted to continue her studies, something that many girls in Jharkhand &#8211; her home region of India &#8211; are unable to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jharkhand has some of the <strong>highest rates of child and early marriage<\/strong> in India, which exceeded 32% according to the most recent <a href=\"http:\/\/rchiips.org\/nfhs\/NFHS-5_FCTS\/Jharkhand.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Family Health Survey<\/a>. Globally, <a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/XLS_Child-marriage-database_May-2023.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 1 in 5 girls<\/a> are married before the age of 18. In some countries this figure is closer to 2 in 5 girls, or 40%, with 12% being wedded prior to the age of 15.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Child, early and forced marriage is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/publications\/2016\/12\/cedaw-for-youth#:~:text=The%20Convention%20on%20the%20Elimination,women's%20and%20girls'%20equal%20rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>human rights violation<\/strong><\/a> and a form of gender-based violence (GBV). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/montenegro\/en\/stories\/early-marriages-violation-human-rights#:~:text=Child%20marriage%20is%20a%20violation,of%20poverty%20%2D%20particularly%20for%20girls.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Child marriage<\/a> cuts short girls\u2019 education and obstructs pathways for healthy living, growth and development. It often leads to early pregnancies, which are dangerous for young girls. It also increases the <a href=\"https:\/\/2017-2020.usaid.gov\/news-information\/fact-sheets\/child-early-and-forced-marriage-usg-response#_ftn2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risks<\/a> of acquiring HIV and experiencing other forms of GBV.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The practice of child marriage is intricately linked to a variety of <strong>sociocultural, religious and economic factors<\/strong>, such as poverty, inequality, conflict and barriers to educational opportunities. Each of these factors plays a major role in the communities where child marriage remains stubbornly high despite policy and program efforts designed to prevent it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Pushpa, many girls around the world want education, but have few options beyond becoming wives and mothers. Parents of adolescent girls often face <strong>socioeconomic pressures<\/strong> to accept offers of early marriage. And many mothers, like Pushpa\u2019s mother Rukmani, were also married before the age of 18 and had no say in determining their own futures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even where laws prohibit child marriage, changing <strong>social and gender norms<\/strong> is key to preventing this practice. Mothers can be strong allies in this fight and advocate for girls\u2019 continued education.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\" style=\"text-transform:uppercase\">Umang: Bringing Normative Change around Child Marriage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcommunities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Global Communities<\/a>, in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icrw.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Center for Research on Women<\/a>, designed the Umang project, which is a comprehensive approach to preventing child and early marriage in <strong>Jharkhand, India<\/strong>. The project partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jslps.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Government of Jharkhand<\/a> to test the model in two districts, Godda and Jamtara, and is now implemented by <a href=\"https:\/\/pciglobal.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>PCI India<\/strong><\/a>, an independent organization created by Global Communities in the spirit of locally led development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Umang Aasmaan Chhune Ki\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TjfdHn6vji0?start=6&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">ICRW addresses child marriage under Umang by working with girls in schools, engaging men in community settings and advocating with educational institutions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Umang is a women-led, norm shifting intervention<\/strong>, where women collectives play the central role in molding household and community attitudes away from marrying adolescent girls.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalcommunities.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/3-Tier-Institutional-Structure-of-SHGs.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50059 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The Umang project works with women&#8217;s <strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aajeevika.gov.in\/work-structure\/community-institutional\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Self-Help Groups<\/strong><\/a><strong> (SHGs)<\/strong>, which are supported by the Government of Jharkhand and provide a powerful platform for women to discuss their ideas and strategic interests. Women engaged in SHGs often design collective action plans to challenge various harmful practices, such as child marriage.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by Umang, SHG members learn different communication skills to meaningfully participate in discussions and decision-making processes to delay marriages in their communities. Umang strengthens the bonds between <strong>mothers and daughters<\/strong>, helping the girls to fulfill their aspirations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two women reached by Umang were Rukmani and Pushpa\u2019s aunt Vimla, who both supported Pushpa\u2019s continued education. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I had never considered myself worthy of taking decisions or going against social practices. But project Umang made me realize the difference I can make as a mother.<\/p>\n<cite>Rukmani, Umang participant, Pushpa&#8217;s mother<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Umang brings mothers to the center stage<\/strong>, as they are well placed to effect change and advocate for the betterment of their daughters. Many of these women are survivors of harmful social practices, too: 85% of mothers who participated in Umang could not make decisions about their own marriages, 75% were married before the age of 18, 40% had their first child as children, and 54% never attended school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalcommunities.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Umang-infobox.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50090\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Between February 2021 and March 2023, PCI India and its partners conducted an <strong>evaluation of Umang<\/strong>, which showed the following results:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Girls\u2019 belief in their ability to resist marriage pressure increased from 77% at baseline to 95% at endline;\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls expressed increased aspirations to study through 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade, from 78 to 87%;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls\u2019 confidence in their ability to complete education spiked from 60 to 75%;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls\u2019 belief that they should only work if their in-laws and husbands allow them dropped from 63 to 54%;\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mothers\u2019 reservations against sending their daughters for higher education and fear of delaying marriage decreased from 17 to 12%;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The number of girls who faced pressure from parents to end education early decreased from 22 to 15%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalcommunities.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Umang_Socio-Ecological-Model-1024x973.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50115 size-full\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Umang\u2019s design is layered upon the <strong>socio-ecosystem <\/strong>of the<strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>lives of women and girls. <strong>Its main success lies in women\u2019s leadership<em>.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:16px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to Umang, women now negotiate with their husbands and others, often successfully, to delay marriage and continue education of adolescent girls. Moreover, women leaders engage with government officials to demand quality services so that adolescent girls can pursue higher education.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, Umang enables women leaders to provide <strong>community-based counseling services to girls and their parents <\/strong>so that they can learn<strong> <\/strong>about the harmful aspects of child marriage, the value of education and possible career opportunities. Counseling both girls and their parents ensures there is coordination within the family to support their daughters\u2019 aspirations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/globalcommunities.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/India_Project-Umang_Kishori-Help-Desk-1024x789.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50060\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Students visit Kishori Help Desk, a significant component under Umang that offers counseling to adolescent girls on career, education, SRHR (Sexual &#038; Reproductive Health &#038; Rights) and life skills.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:12px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pushpa is now 18 years old and will soon complete 12<sup>th<\/sup> grade. She is planning to continue her studies. Her mother is her biggest champion, ready to invest more in her education. <strong>Since 2019, Umang has reached more than 60,000 mothers of school-aged girls in Godda and Jamtara<\/strong>.
