Washington, D.C. \u2013 <\/strong>Project Concern International (PCI) is proud to be a partner of the Gap Inc. P.A.C.E. program, which has now reached over 500,000 women and girls around the world, providing them with life skills education and training to help them succeed in their personal and professional lives. Since 2018, PCI has graduated 10,000 Women Empowered (WE) members from the program in urban, rural and indigenous communities in Guatemala, Nicaragua and Tanzania.<\/p>\n

At the end of 2019, with support from the Centre for Catalyzing Change (C3)<\/a> and Gap Inc., PCI launched the Transformative Action for Rural Adolescents (TARA) Project in Bihar, India. TARA will strengthen the economic self-reliance and health knowledge of adolescent girls using the P.A.C.E. Adolescent Girls Curriculum. The program will be piloted with 1,100 girls ages 14-18.<\/p>\n

500,000 Women and Girls Complete Gap Inc.’s Global Education and Life Skills Training Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

New Partnerships Expand Reach of Program<\/em><\/p>\n

San Francisco \u2013 <\/strong>In advance of International Women\u2019s Day, Gap Inc. announced that over 500,000 women and girls have completed its signature education and life skills training program, P.A.C.E. (Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement), which the company currently operates in 17 countries.<\/p>\n

Founded on the belief that all women deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential, Gap Inc. originally launched P.A.C.E. in 2007 for women working in the apparel supply chain, where it runs in over 300 factory locations in collaboration with Gap Inc. suppliers. The company has since expanded the program to other sites in order to reach more women, including in rural community settings, academic and vocational institutions, emergency relief centers, and more. Based on strong program evaluation results, participant feedback, and independent research, Gap Inc. has continually refined and scaled P.A.C.E. through partnerships with nonprofit organizations, intergovernmental organizations, government agencies, community groups, and new corporate partners.<\/p>\n

The company\u00a0recently\u00a0began\u00a0providing no-cost\u00a0license agreements\u00a0of\u00a0the P.A.C.E. curriculum and technical training to Abercrombie & Fitch\u00a0Co., Avery Dennison, Hasbro, New Balance, PVH Corp., and food and beverage company Want\u00a0Want\u00a0Group (China), further expanding P.A.C.E. to supply chains outside of the apparel industry.<\/p>\n

Additionally,\u00a0the\u00a0P.A.C.E.\u00a0curriculum is\u00a0now\u00a0benefiting people who have been forcibly displaced by providing them with vital skills trainings. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)\u00a0facilitated the expansion of trainings to refugee settlements in Jordan and T\u00fcrkiye. Last year, Gap Inc. and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) signed an agreement enabling IOM to implement the P.A.C.E. curriculum modules in refugee sites in Bangladesh.\u00a0Gap Inc.\u00a0also\u00a0partners\u00a0with Heifer International to deliver the program to women smallholder farmers in Cambodia, and\u00a0Project Concern International implements the program\u00a0in urban, rural and indigenous communities\u00a0in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Tanzania and India. In India, Self Employed Women\u2019s Association (SEWA) is currently\u00a0leading the largest expansion of P.A.C.E. in a single geography.<\/p>\n

Emawati\u00a0is a young woman who used the skills she gained through P.A.C.E. to\u00a0take charge of\u00a0her\u00a0life.\u00a0When she\u00a0completed the workplace training at her factory in Indonesia, she said,\u00a0“The P.A.C.E. financial module taught us how to manage our finances and set-up long term goals.”\u00a0Emawati\u00a0has since\u00a0started\u00a0her own side business selling headscarves online. She\u00a0added,\u00a0“I want to be a role model for all women in Indonesia. Women can earn money on their own and do not have to depend on men!”<\/p>\n

Emawati\u2019s\u00a0story is one of the hundreds of thousands from women who have gained skills that will\u00a0also benefit\u00a0their families and communities for generations to come. Participant survey feedback and independent evaluation shows that women who participate in P.A.C.E. report increased knowledge, skills and productivity, as well as\u00a0higher\u00a0self-esteem\u00a0and\u00a0confidence. The curriculum, which is\u00a0contextualized to fit local priorities and customs, includes courses on communication, problem-solving,\u00a0time and stress management, general and reproductive health, water sanitation and hygiene, legal literacy, financial literacy, and more.<\/p>\n

Sarah Degnan Kambou, President of International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) said, \u201cP.A.C.E. is one of the longest running and successful life-skills programs for female factory workers and women and girls in surrounding communities that I\u2019ve engaged with. I\u2019m also impressed with how P.A.C.E. is structured, with a thoughtful approach that can be scaled to reach a very large number of women and girls. Through ICRW\u2019s analysis, we have validated that P.A.C.E. is having a significant impact, including a reported increase of 150% in self-efficacy and 100% increase in workplace influence.
